Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was a Spanish artist, active in the Baroque era. He is most commonly known for his depictions of religious scenes, flower girls and beggars.
Life[]
Murillo was born in December 1617 to parents Gaspar Esteban, a barber and surgeon, and María Peréz Murillo, most likely in Seville. His parents died when he was young, so he was mostly taken care of by his aunt and uncle. He got married in 1645 and had a child, named María, soon after. He was an established painter in Spain at the time and his wife and daughter became the subjects of two of his paintings. He continued painting until his death in April 1682 at the age of 64.
