Wassily Kandinsky is a famous Russian artist. He is best known for his pioneering abstract paintings containing

haphazardly positioned lines and colours.

Life[]

Kandinsky was born in 1866 at Moscow, Russia, the son of a tea merchant. As a child, he recalled being fascinated by colour and line. Comparing painting to music, he quoted; "Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul". At the age of 30, Kandinsky forfeited a promising job in teaching law and economics to enroll in an art school in Munich. In 1911, he joined the Blue Rider's, an artists association formed by Russian immigrants. Later on in life, he taught a basic design class and an advanced theory class at the famous school, Bauhaus. This was the period where he created a lot of his most famous paintings. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944, aged 77.
