Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, or Raphael for short, was an Italian painter and architect of the Renaissance period. He is one of the most famous artists in history, known for his clarity of brushstrokes and his usage of light. Together with Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, he formed the trinity of great artists in that period.

Life[]

Raphael was born in the small town of Urbino in the Marche region of Italy to father Giovanni Santi and mother Magia di Battista di Nicola Ciarla. His mother died by the time he turned 8, and his father at 11. He was adopted by his uncle Bartolomeo, a priest. During his teenage years he drew a picture of himself that showed his immense talent. He was trained in 1494, and by the time he was 17 he was declared a master (that is to say fully trained). He created a large number of paintings, including the Wedding of the Virgin and The Parnassus, in his life. He died of a fever in 1520 at the young age of 37
