Giotto di Bondone, or Giotto for short, was an Italian painter and architect who is considered to have begun the

Italian Renaissance. He is regarded by many to have pioneered painting in Italy.

Giotto was born in circa 1266, probably the son of a Florence blacksmith. Little is known about his early years. He moved to Rome sometime in his youth. From there, he painted frescoes in Assisi and created a number of paintings from there up to his death in 1337. According to artist Giorgio Vasari, he was buried in Santa Maria del Fiore, a cathedral in Florence.
